A Lesson in Charity

Pepper wants to go in the pool. Right now! “Can we go in the pool? PLEASE!!!”
I tell her we have to drop off some diapers and formula to a new mom who needs help.
“Why can’t someone else do it?” She says. She REALLY wants to go in the pool!
“What if no one does it?”
She looks scared, eyes wide.
“OK! Then go right now!”

Hold My Hand

I found Coca Cola’s “Share a Coke” campaign disturbing. Standing in front of a cooler for minutes trying to decide which can to choose. It just didn’t feel right to pick a strange name. Too often there were none I recognized and then there’s the strange green can, that’s just plain wrong. I put the can back on the shelf until my daughter reassured me it really was Coke. Last week as I was totally immersed in my laptop my granddaughter repeatedly urged me to “LOOK!” at her coke can. Expecting to see a familiar name I brushed her off. “In a minute.” “No Nina, look!” I turn to see she is holding the can with one hand the other extended. The can says ‘Hold my hand.’ I take her little hand and we smile. Ok Coke. Home run on that one.

The Yin to my Yang

For years I have been sharing Pepper stories on my Facebook. We have six grandchildren, every one remarkable, unique but for some reason Pepper and I just “connect.” Maybe it’s because I’ve helped care for her since infancy or maybe we just “get each other.” She see’s goodness, beauty, purpose in everyone and everything around her. She saves butterflies and detest bullies. She see’s no color or difference in this world. Pepper just turned 7 and I am soon to celebrate my 65th birthday yet we converse on an adult level. I am surprised and delighted everyday at her insight into the world. We share a love of everything bagels with cream cheese, strawberry ice cream and writing. When she came to me asking to write a Blog I thought ‘why not? what better way to encourage her ability to express herself?’ So these are our stories, Peppers and mine. Her Yin to my Yang.

What do Grandma’s smell like?

Pepper is a snuggler. When she snoozes in bed with you expect to wake with a foot in your face or back. Just before we fall asleep I realize she’s sniffing me!
Expecting the worst I ask. “What do I smell like? My grandmother smelled like moth balls!”
Sleepy Pepper “You smell like goodness.”

Her first post. Needed help with the spelling.
“How do you spell climb?”
C-l-i-m-b, I say.
“That makes no sense. There’s no B. It’s not climB.”
Well that’s the way you spell it.
“That just doesn’t make any sense and I’m NOT going to spell it that way.” Folds her arms and shakes her blond head to show she means business.
You’re blog, your rules. Blog on my Spicy Pepper. Love Nina

Hello world!

We call her Pepper because she is spicy. Spicy, smart and she has a lot to say. I often quote her on my FB. She just celebrated a birthday and said she wanted to write a Blog about what it’s like to be seven. I love to write, now she loves to write, so we will do it together. Nina & Pepper. Bloggers. Who knew?
